Senator Paul Calls for Answers and Hearings in the Senate after Recent Arrests of Suspected Terrorists
June 3rd, 2011 Press Release from the office of Senator Rand Paul.
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Sen. Rand Paul today held a press conference to congratulate the Federal Bureau of Investigation for working in conjunction with Bowling Green law enforcement agencies in their recent apprehension of potential terrorists in our own backyard.
Collaboration between agencies is the key to effectively combating terrorism, and the citizens of Kentucky can be proud of the vigilance of their local and federal law enforcement.
It is the primary duty of our government to provide for the defense of the people. Law enforcement stands on the front lines of our battle against those who would do us harm, and we honor their service and efforts to keep us safe.
The Political Doctrine of Statism
Towards a National Socialist America
The Patriot Act that was rammed through after the September 2001 attacks was one of the more egregious blows against liberty in our lifetimes. It shredded core rights and liberties that had been taken for granted for centuries. Liberties are never lost all at once, but the Patriot Act, as disgusting in its details as in its name and the rhetoric that surrounded it, was for the United States the turning point, the law that best exemplifies a full-scale embrace of statism as a national ideology. It is a law so severe, so outlandish, as to cause people to forget what it means to be free.
This is why I believe Ron Paul’s book Liberty Defined to be one of the most important statements of our time. He defines liberty clearly and cleanly as freedom from coercive interference from the state. That is how the liberal tradition from Aquinas to Jefferson to Rothbard understood it, too, for there is no greater threat to liberty than the state. Its powers must be crushed if we are to revisit what liberty means.
ABC News: Obama Admin. Says Rand Paul Risking National Security by Delaying Patriot Act
The Obama Administration today accused Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., of threatening national security by insisting on more debate on extension of the Patriot Act and potentially allowing it to expire at midnight.
Read more about the Kentucky senator’s objection and potential lapse of the Patriot Act:
If Congress fails to pass the legislation before it expires at the end of day, it will pose “a significant risk to U.S. national security,” a senior administration official told ABC News.
“The bottom line is that if these provisions are allowed to lapse, even temporarily, the nation will be less safe,” the official said.
Rand Paul on the Senate Floor
There’s been a lot of discussion of the PATRIOT Act, and we’re told basically we wouldn’t be able to capture these terrorists if we didn’t give up some of our liberties; if we didn’t give up some of the Fourth Amendment and allow it to be easier for the police to come into our homes.
We were so frightened after 9/11 that we readily gave up these freedoms.
We said, well, the Fourth Amendment is not that important. We’ll just let the government look at all of our records and we’ll make it easier for the government to look at our records.
The question you have to ask, though, is whether or not we would still be able to catch terrorists by using the Fourth Amendment as it was intended, and having the protections of the Fourth Amendment.
What you have to ask yourself is think about the worst person in your community. Think about someone accused of murder or rape or a pedophile.
You think of these people; do you know what happens if someone is accused of that?
Even if it’s 3:00 in the morning and they want to get their records or they want to go into their house, they call a judge. This is something very important.
They get the warrants almost all the time. But it’s one step of protection. What you have is the protection where you don’t have police officers writing warrants to come into your house. You have to have it reviewed by a judge.
What we’ve done to the PATRIOT Act is taken away some of the protections of the Fourth Amendment. The Fourth Amendment says you need to name the person and the place to be searched.
We’ve taken away those protections.
For the past seven hours, Senator Paul has been holding the Senate floor!
“For the past seven hours, Senator Paul has been holding the Senate floor, keeping Reid and his allies from rushing this bill through the Senate without debate or amendments.”
Please give Senator Paul’s office a call at 202-224-4343 to thank him for standing up for the American people and the Constitution!
Afterward, please give both of your senators another call through the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121.
Ask them to stand with Rand Paul, the Constitution, and the fundamental liberties that made America great by opposing the rushed extension of these three provisions without debate – and unamended.
Together, we have a great opportunity to make a difference, but I need you all to remain as steadfast and committed to this fight as Senator Paul.
I hope you will stand with Senator Paul and C4L by again contacting both of your senators to oppose the extension of the so-called “Patriot” Act.

Senator Rand Paul comments on Obama's Middle East Speech
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sen. Rand Paul today issued the following statement regarding President Obama’s speech on American-Middle Eastern policy yesterday.
“President Obama yesterday noted we are at a ‘moment of opportunity’ in the Middle East right now. If that is in fact true, then it is an opportunity he is wasting.
“We should use the upheaval in this ‘Arab Spring’ to take a good long look at our foreign policy over the past few decades. Instead, we are watching this President make the same mistakes as previous administrations, but doing so in a far more dramatic and dangerous fashion.
“Our mistakes in foreign policy have always been from hubris. We somehow believe that we can dictate the policies of the world, and enforce them with our military and economic strength. While this might sound like a good idea to many, it has its limits and its consequences.
“For example, instead of seeking proper authority from Congress and the Constitution to go to war with Libya, President Obama empowered the United Nations and the Arab League, two bodies that together endanger the security and sovereignty of our ally Israel.
